St Michael's Academy

Mission Statement

The misson statement of the school, as drawn up by staff, pupils and parents is as follows:

* To maintain a caring environment, based on Gospel values, in which each member of the school community is valued and all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop, spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically to their full potential.

* To ensure that all aspects of the curriculum, both formal and informal, contribute positively to the achievement of the above and that pupils are prepared for the challenges and responsibilities of adult life.

* To seek continually to provide and support the highest standards of teaching and learning throughout the curriculum.

* To inculcate mutual respect, understanding and co-operation among all members of the school community and to develop and maintain close collaboration with parents and parishes in furtherance of this aim.

In order to achieve these aims, the school is committed to the expectation of the highest standards of work and behaviour and the systematic development and maintenance of a strong and distinctive ethos, based on an atmosphere of support and encouragement both within the individual classroom and throughout the whole school.

In common with most other schools, St Michael's Academy has a three-year rolling school plan drawn up, in consultation with staff and designed to meet the aims outlined above. It includes effective learning and teaching as the key developments of 5-14 and Higher Still.

Extra-curricular activities play a large part in the life of the school and which has a creditable level of recent success in the sporting, business, musical and cultural fields. Pupils are also offered the opportunity to develop their study and homework skills through participation in the school's various Supported Study schemes. These include general weekly sessions for senior pupils, subject-specific revision classes, an Easter Revision Club, a summer school project ("School Daze") and a peer support project involving S6 students, staff and pupils from S1. In addition, some pupils are involved in the school's Internet project, "Eurodaze", which is sponsored by the EU.
