The first Honorary President and
Patron of the club was the Earl of Eglinton. 1855 also saw the
introduction of the Glasgow Ayrshire competition ... a one day event
when clubs from Glasgow compete with Ayrshire clubs for the Eglinton
trophy. In 1857, the 13th Earl presented the official trophy
affectionately known as "The Eglinton Jug".
During the 144 years in
which this competition has been played, the Kilwinning bowling clubs
have won the trophy at least twice, in 1970 and 1978.
